Wortham Manor Refurbishment

Wortham Manor is a medieval and Tudor manor house of exceptional heritage significance, set within extensive grounds in the Devon countryside. The project focused on upgrading building services and improving internal comfort, while preserving the historic fabric and character of the property.

Key works included the installation of a ground source heat pump system, alongside upgrades to the existing heating and hot water distribution. New underfloor heating was introduced to selected ground floor rooms, requiring the careful lifting, excavation, and reinstatement of historic floors. Electrical systems were also upgraded to support modern usage requirements.

Internal alterations were undertaken to improve functionality, including the installation of new bathrooms, shower rooms, and utility spaces. While not a full rewire or replumb, the works introduced new radiators and improved overall system efficiency, with hot water now generated and stored within a central plant system.

Joinery interventions were sensitively integrated, including the installation of a fire screen door to improve safety, along with new kitchen worktops, window cills, and skirtings. Structural floor improvements were carried out in conjunction with wider works, including the lifting and reinstatement of existing floorboards.

Masonry repairs formed part of the external works, including repointing to areas of the building envelope to ensure long-term durability. Internally, finishes were upgraded using a combination of traditional and modern materials, including limewash and breathable coatings, alongside more robust finishes in wet areas.

The result is a well-balanced scheme that enhances comfort and usability while respecting the architectural and historic significance of the building.
